Ingredients

  • 2 chicken livers (~100g, organic or pasture-raised)
  • 1 tbsp butter, plus 1 tsp extra for blending
  • ¼ onion, roughly chopped
  • ½ small apple or pear, peeled and chopped
  • 3–4 tbsp bone broth, plus more to adjust consistency
Opt for organic or pasture-raised livers when you can — the quality of the animal's diet directly affects the nutrient density of the liver.

Instructions

Step 1 — Soak (both methods)

  1. 1Place chicken livers in a bowl and cover with cold water or milk. Soak for 30–60 minutes, then drain and pat dry. This draws out any bitterness and noticeably mellows the flavor.

Option A — Steam

  1. 2Place the drained livers, onion, and apple or pear in a steamer basket.
  2. 3Steam for 25–30 minutes until the livers are cooked through with no pink remaining.
  3. 4Let cool slightly, then transfer to a blender with 1 tbsp butter and 3 tbsp bone broth. Blend until completely smooth, adding more broth a little at a time to reach a creamy, spreadable consistency.

Option B — Bake

  1. 2Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. 3Place the drained livers, onion, and apple or pear in a small baking dish. Pour bone broth over everything.
  3. 4Bake for 25 minutes until the livers are cooked through. Do not overbake — dry liver will not blend smoothly.
  4. 5Let cool slightly, then transfer to a blender with 1 tbsp butter. Blend until completely smooth, adding bone broth a little at a time to reach a creamy, spreadable consistency.

⚠️ Offer once or twice a week maximum — chicken liver is very high in vitamin A, which can accumulate if given too frequently. Always introduce as a single new food and wait 3–5 days before introducing another.

Making it Fun

🥄 Start tiny — begin with just ½ tsp. The flavor is new and unfamiliar; small repeated tastes build acceptance over time.
🍠 Mix it in — stir a small spoonful into sweet potato or carrot purée if baby hesitates. Familiar flavor, hidden nutrition.
👀 Let them watch — make it in front of your baby. The sounds and smells of cooking are their earliest food education.
