Why this works so well This is one of the simplest ways to introduce fish. One pan, a handful of ingredients, and about 10 minutes from start to finish. The butter and garlic keep the salmon moist while it cooks, and a little lemon at the end brightens the whole thing without overpowering the delicate flavor of the fish.

Instructions

  1. 1 Pat the salmon dry and season lightly with salt.
  2. 2 Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. We use our Our Place pan for this.
  3. 3 Add the salmon and cook gently for about 3 to 4 minutes on the first side, depending on thickness.
  4. 4 Flip the salmon. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and the finely grated garlic to the pan.
  5. 5 As the butter melts, spoon the garlic butter over the salmon while it finishes cooking, about 2 to 4 minutes more.
  6. 6 Add the lemon juice during the last minute of cooking and spoon the buttery sauce over the salmon again.
  7. 7 Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
  8. 8 Check carefully for any bones, then flake into soft pieces for baby.
Checking for bones: Even boneless, skinless fillets can occasionally have small pin bones. Run your fingers gently over the flaked salmon and check carefully before serving to a baby or young toddler.
A small note on the garlic: Garlic can burn quickly, so it works best to add it after the salmon is flipped rather than at the very beginning. This keeps the flavor mellow rather than bitter.

Adaptations by Age

AgeHow to serve
6 to 9 months Flake into small, soft pieces and check thoroughly for bones. Serve alongside a soft mashed vegetable.
9 to 12 months Can be served in slightly larger flaked pieces for self-feeding, or offered as a small strip for baby-led weaning if your baby is ready for it.
Family Scale up the recipe and serve as is, with rice or a side salad.

Storage

Best fresh

Fish is best served fresh right after cooking. It only takes about 10 minutes to make, so there is rarely a need to prepare it ahead of time.
